A Lottery Pool in Tennessee Won $420 Million Powerball Jackpot

An enormous jackpot of over $420 million was recently won by 20 employees from North American Stamping of Portland. The lottery pool was started by Amy O’Neal of Lafayette, Tennessee 8 years before and she says that she simply began the lottery pool because she thought it would be fun and increase everyone’s chances of winning.

So years went by where these 20 employees bought tickets each week and then finally, a miracle happened. They won! The $420 million dollar jackpot worked out to be about $255 million when taken as a lump sum and it was split equally 20 ways, giving each person a little over $12 million.

What the article doesn’t say is how challenging it is to manage a lottery pool for 8 years. There are tickets to buy and money to collect. It’s a good idea to make copies of the tickets and distribute them to the other members of the pool. If lottery pools are set up incorrectly or run poorly, it can cause arguments and hard feelings amongst employees. This has happened an untold number of times and is the number one reason why lottery pools break up.
