Millions of people around the country are rushing to their nearest gas stations to play their favorite numbers in hopes of winning the ever increasing Powerball jackpot. Players use a variety of methods to pick their numbers, some use birthdays, addresses, even telephone numbers. Players often stick to their guns when it comes to their numbers, but this could very well be their downfall. Gail Howard, creator of the patented Smart Luck system says this is exactly the reason.

Tip #1: Forget the Quick Picks

Quick Picks give you the least amount of control over the fate of your numbers. “Don’t play them.” she says. Every Quick Pick is randomly generated by the computer often giving you numbers grouped together with the worst mathematical probabilities. You would do better closing your eyes and selecting numbers at random, seriously.

Tip #2: Be Original

No one likes a copycat! Players should refrain from using numbers of past lottery winners. The odds of those exact numbers hitting again are far less than picking your own unique numbers. Depending on the game you may never see those numbers hit again. Don’t do it.

Tip #3: Stay Away from Patterns

We’re guilty of this one as well. It can be very tempting when filing out your slip to select numbers in diagonals or neat little designs, just beware that you will most likely be sharing your winnings with thousands of people. “There have been 150,000 tickets in just one drawing of people playing patterns,” Howard says. Most players without a number strategy either opt for a quick pick or designs, meaning that if you win, they will also win shrinking your earnings significantly.

Tip #4: Balance is Key

Never pick all odd or even numbers. You want to make sure that your selection is evenly distributed. The odds of a given game only picking odd numbers or even numbers is statistically lower. Just remember to mix it up a bit!

Tip #5: Avoid the Birthdays

“People like to play the calendar numbers,” Howard says. Millions of people base their numbers off of birthday’s, life events, ages, and more. These sound like good number picks, however they are completely unbalanced. The calendar usually stops at 31 days and most lottery games have a wider number range, meaning that you are leaving significant numbers off the board. This would be perfectly fine if the highest number you could pick was 31, but it often isn’t. It’s ok to mix in some significant numbers but be sure to spread them out and utilized the games full number range.

Tip #6: Reduce the Odds

The entire objective of lotto strategies is to increase your odds of winning. There are certain games that naturally give you a better chance of selecting valuable numbers, these are the games you want to play the most. It’s a lot easier to win in pick 3 games than it is in pick 4 and on. Although the jackpots are a lot smaller, cash 5 games and cash 3 games generally produce more winners over time. We find it advantageous to balance out the games we play with lower risk, higher probability games.
